St Edburgha's Church - history

Yardley was first recorded in 972 and was featured in the Domesday Book of 1086. The church was first built on this site during the 13th Century, it was constructed in Aston Parish in the Diocese of Lichfield. The church was dedicated to Edburgha of Winchester (died in 960). She was a nun and was granddaughter of King Alfred. She was canonised in 972. She spent her entire life at St Mary's Abbey in Winchester. After her death, some of her remains were transferred to Pershore Abbey in Worcestershire. Yardley was mentioned in the the original endowment of the Abbey, and was mentioned in King Alfred's Charter for Pershore in 972.

The church was built of sandstone. The lofty west tower dates to the 15th Century. The south wall of the chancel retains the work of the 13th Century. The north and south transepts were added in the 14th Century. The tower and north aisle were 15th Century additions. The pulpit was added in 1627 and has 17th Century panelling. There is a fine west window of the Last Supper by John Hardman and Company of 1892.

There is fine monuments in the church dating from the 15th to 19th Centuries. Including one of the Rev Dr Henry Greswolde. The church has been a Grade I listed building since 1952. It was a part of Worcestershire until it became part of Birmingham in 1911. The earliest documented references to the church was either 1165 or 1187.
